OpenAI Abandons E-Commerce Ambitions, Pivots Away from ChatGPT Shopping Features

OpenAI's ambition to evolve ChatGPT into a central e-commerce platform has encountered a setback, at least for the time being. The company disclosed on Tuesday that it is stepping back from a recently introduced feature enabling direct purchases through the chatbot's interface.

Originally launched last year, OpenAI positioned ChatGPT as a "shopping assistant" designed to link consumers with appropriate retailers. A specific feature named "Instant Checkout," introduced in September, allowed users to discuss their shopping needs with the chatbot and add items to a cart within ChatGPT, similar to a conventional online store. While transactions were ultimately processed by the vendors, ChatGPT served as the gateway for these purchases.

However, Instant Checkout has not achieved significant traction. Amid other updates concerning ChatGPT's shopping capabilities on Tuesday, OpenAI announced it would be scaling back this feature. The company explained in a blog post that the initial version "did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide," and it will now allow merchants to utilize their own checkout systems while OpenAI concentrates on enhancing product discovery.

An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the company is deprioritizing the development of Instant Checkout as a standalone feature. Instead, the focus will shift to improving how consumers discover products. OpenAI will continue to support various checkout methods, including redirecting users to merchants' own websites.

Previous reports indicated OpenAI's revised strategy involves merchants creating dedicated apps within ChatGPT, which would then direct users to complete their purchases on the merchants' sites. A source noted that ChatGPT users simply "weren't using the chatbot to actually help them make purchases." Supporting this, an October study on referral traffic from ChatGPT found that e-commerce sites were not generating substantial revenue from the platform's users.

Rather than building ChatGPT into a direct shopping portal, OpenAI is now refining it to function as a centralized hub for consumer information. The goal is for online shoppers to view the chatbot as an intermediary research tool that aids in final purchase decisions.

This revamped shopping experience is powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), an open standard for e-commerce developed in collaboration with the fintech giant Stripe. The protocol leverages data supplied by participating merchants. Moving forward, OpenAI stated that ChatGPT will deliver more comprehensive product details, including side-by-side images and comparative metrics such as pricing, features, and reviews.
