Otter.ai Secures $320M to Fuel Enterprise Growth and Global Expansion

Otter.ai, the meeting note-taking platform, revealed on Tuesday that it has secured $320 million in funding from General Catalyst's Customer Value Fund (CVF). This particular fund operates differently from traditional venture capital—it injects capital into startups without taking equity, instead earning returns based on the results of marketing expenditures. According to Otter.ai, the new funds will be directed toward enterprise growth, go-to-market strategy, international expansion, and product innovation.

The startup has been operating for nearly a decade and, according to PitchBook data, had raised a total of $50 million prior to this round, with its most recent funding occurring in 2021. Last year, Otter achieved a significant revenue milestone by surpassing $100 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR). While the company indicated it is now approaching new milestones, it declined to share updated figures. Otter also reported that 40 million users have engaged with its product to date—an increase from 25 million last year. However, in the highly crowded meeting note-taking space, a key challenge for Otter will be customer retention. Notably, the startup did not disclose any numbers regarding monthly active users or churn.

Pranav Singhvi, Partner and Co-founder of CVF at General Catalyst, expressed strong confidence in the company: "Voice is one of the biggest untapped opportunities in enterprise AI, and Otter is at the forefront of it—a conviction that's only deepened watching Otter's growth. When Otter enables enterprises to capture critical voice data and turns it into actionable business insights, teams move faster, decisions get sharper, and productivity compounds across the organization, and that's why it's a strong partner for CVF."

The competitive landscape is intense, featuring well-funded meeting notetakers such as Fireflies.ai, Granola, and Read AI; newer entrants like Calendly, Wispr, and Superhuman (which acquired Fathom); and other players including Circleback, Talat, and Quill. Most of these competitors aim to connect with enterprise systems and automate workflows based on data captured during meetings. Otter is pursuing a similar direction. In recent years, it has launched a meeting assistant, a search function that operates across applications, and integrations with other AI tools.

"When we start thinking about what is actually the bigger problem that people are facing right now, we saw this large pain point in meeting-heavy roles, where people are back-to-back in conversations. These meetings are the work for them. That's either customer conversations or, from a sales standpoint. That's where strategies are discussed. But meetings are terribly inefficient because when you come into a meeting, you spend the first twenty minutes recapping what was said before to catch everybody up," he said.

The company is now experimenting with delivering insights before, after, and during meetings. It has been testing a feature that sends users a pre-brief containing details and background information, drawing context from previous conversations across various surfaces. Additionally, Otter is trying out a Live Assist feature that allows users to pose questions to the AI assistant during a meeting to retrieve knowledge.
