Trump Bans Federal Use of Anthropic AI Products After DoD Dispute

President Trump has ordered federal agencies to stop using all products from Anthropic, following the company's public disagreement with the Department of Defense. The directive was issued in a post on Truth Social, which allows for a six-month transition period for departments currently using Anthropic's services. However, the president made it clear that Anthropic is no longer considered an acceptable federal contractor.
"We don’t need it, we don’t want it, and will not do business with them again," President Trump stated in the post. Notably, the announcement does not include plans to use the Defense Production Act or to classify Anthropic as a supply chain risk. Instead, the president called on the company to cooperate during the phase-out, warning of "major civil and criminal consequences" if it fails to do so.
The conflict arose from Anthropic's refusal to permit its AI models to be used for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons—restrictions that Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth deemed excessively limiting. CEO Dario Amodei reaffirmed this position in a public statement on Thursday, declining to compromise on these two principles.
"Our strong preference is to continue to serve the Department and our warfighters—with our two requested safeguards in place," Amodei wrote. "Should the Department choose to offboard Anthropic, we will work to enable a smooth transition to another provider, avoiding any disruption to ongoing military planning, operations, or other critical missions."
