Reddit Launches AI-Powered Shopping Search with Community Recommendations

On Thursday, Reddit revealed it is trialing a new AI search feature that connects community suggestions with merchandise from select shopping and advertising partners. A limited number of users in the United States will begin encountering search results that incorporate interactive product displays, complete with prices, photos, and direct links to purchase.
This development underscores Reddit's ongoing effort to merge its community-focused environment with e-commerce functionality. The initiative follows the introduction last year of the platform's first shoppable advertisement format, Dynamic Product Ads (DPA), which shows users personalized product suggestions aligned with their interests.
Participants in this test who search for queries such as "best noise-canceling headphones" or "electronic gift ideas for a college student" will find a carousel of relevant products at the bottom of their results. This display will highlight items that have been directly referenced by users in related posts and comment threads. Tapping on a product reveals additional details and then redirects the user to the retailer's site to complete a purchase.
"This feature surfaces top-recommended products directly from discussions, giving redditors instant information about any product," the company explained in a blog post. "This test is designed to make Reddit easier to navigate while keeping community perspectives at the center of the experience. We’ll continue learning from how people use this new feature and refine the experience over time."
While other social platforms like TikTok and Instagram have featured integrated shopping tools for some time, Reddit is now pursuing a similar path. The company is also not alone in recently experimenting with AI-powered commerce; for instance, OpenAI's ChatGPT launched an "Instant Checkout" feature last September, enabling users to buy from Etsy and Shopify directly within chat conversations.
Thursday's news arrives shortly after Reddit CEO Steve Huffman remarked during the company's earnings report last week that the platform's AI search engine represents a significant future opportunity, both as a product and a potential revenue source. Huffman also shared that weekly active users for search grew 30% over the past year, climbing from 60 million to 80 million. Meanwhile, weekly active users for the AI-driven Reddit Answers feature surged from 1 million in the first quarter of 2025 to 15 million by the fourth quarter.
