OpenAI CEO Sam Altman took to social media on Friday to highlight what he described as a “cool use case” for the company’s newly launched ChatGPT Work product. He suggested that parents could “connect your family calendars and explain your kids’ interests” to the tool, then “every morning for the drive to school, have it make a podcast that talks about one kid’s soccer game that afternoon, one kid’s upcoming birthday, some news, etc.”

The post sparked a wave of online skepticism, including a pointed retort from Alex Hirsch, creator of the animated show “Gravity Falls”: “What if you just talked to your children.” Hirsch’s reply appeared to resonate far more widely than Altman’s original message—by Saturday morning, Altman’s post had been shared roughly 300 times and garnered about 9,600 likes, while Hirsch’s response had been reposted 9,000 times and racked up 122,000 likes.

This isn’t the first instance of a tech executive championing AI as a way to streamline—or even replace—the everyday human interactions that fill a morning commute. Last year, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed that he had abandoned listening to his favorite podcasts during his drive, opting instead to ask an AI chatbot questions about them. Altman’s latest remarks also echo his previous comments on parenting, particularly when he appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” and said, “I cannot imagine having gone through figuring out how to raise a newborn without ChatGPT.” He did, however, quickly add, “Clearly, people did it for a long time, no problem.”

Winning over parents appears to be a key focus for OpenAI, which recently advertised for a product manager with experience developing trust-sensitive consumer products aimed at families. Yet, despite introducing safety features designed for parental use, the company is also contending with multiple lawsuits from families who allege that ChatGPT contributed to their loved ones’ delusions and suicides. In response, OpenAI has stated it is “continuously improving how our models respond in sensitive interactions.”
