Spotify is making another move to weave artificial intelligence into its listening experience, announcing on Tuesday that Premium subscribers can now engage in interactive conversations with the app to select music or other audio content. This feature is launching initially in the United States, Ireland, and Sweden on both iOS and Android devices, available to users aged 18 and above who communicate in English. Classified as a beta release, Spotify notes that things may not always function flawlessly, but user feedback will be instrumental in refining the product.

This addition marks the latest instance of Spotify leveraging AI technology to assist users in navigating its vast library of music, podcasts, and audiobooks. The company already offers tools like an AI DJ, which speaks in an artificial voice and allows direct interaction, along with AI capabilities for crafting playlists through prompts and integrating with third-party AI chatbots such as ChatGPT.

The new feature expands the ability to chat with Spotify beyond the AI DJ experience, enabling users to communicate with the app across its Home and Now Playing views on mobile devices. Users can type or speak to the app and engage in back-and-forth conversations to decide what to play next. Additionally, Spotify says the app will be able to discuss users' listening history and help them learn more about their favorite music or dive deeper into podcasts or audiobooks.

This means you could ask questions like what inspired a particular song, the release dates of albums, or get suggestions for similar artists based on what you're currently listening to. You can also inquire about your own listening habits, such as when you first played a specific track, or explore the genres you've been streaming lately. In its announcement, Spotify offers several suggestions for using this interactive technology. For example, you could ask Spotify to "play some artists I haven't heard before," then refine that selection with follow-ups like adding a specific artist by name or narrowing it down to more recent tracks. You could further shape the request by asking it to be "more upbeat" or giving other directions. Plus, you can save songs, add them to your queue, or follow the artist through this new feature. The feature is now rolling out to the mentioned markets on mobile devices.
