Spotify Launches AI-Powered "Prompted Playlists" for Premium Subscribers in New Markets

Spotify has expanded the availability of its AI-driven "Prompted Playlists" feature to Premium subscribers in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and Sweden. This rollout follows initial testing in New Zealand and a subsequent launch in the United States and Canada. The tool enables users to generate personalized playlists by describing in plain English what they would like to hear, whether that’s a specific mood, a memory, an activity, or even inspiration drawn from a TV show or movie.

Instead of searching for songs or artists individually, listeners can simply tap "Create," select "Prompted Playlist," and enter a descriptive prompt. The AI interprets a wide range of themes—from musical eras and genres to instruments and personal milestones—and crafts a unique playlist in response. Users can even specify if they prefer new discoveries or tracks from their own library.

Each generated playlist is customized based on the listener’s history and current trends, with every song accompanied by a short explanation for its inclusion. Playlists can be refined by editing the prompt or starting over, and for evolving tastes, they can be set to refresh automatically on a daily or weekly basis.

As the feature remains in beta, Spotify has indicated that adjustments may follow user feedback, and usage limits are currently in place—some subscribers have reported hitting caps after about 20 to 30 prompts. This update is part of a broader push into AI across Spotify’s platform, which recently introduced tools like Page Match for audiobook navigation and enhanced song lyrics with translations and offline access.

Beyond listener features, Spotify is integrating AI internally, with co-CEO Gustav Söderström noting that the company’s top developers have relied on AI for coding since December. The platform is also growing its audiobook segment and will soon allow users in the U.S. and U.K. to purchase physical books directly through the app, following a recent partnership with SeatGeek that simplifies ticket buying for concerts and tours.
