Spotify Launches "Artist Profile Protection" to Combat AI Music Mislabeling

As AI-generated content increasingly floods music streaming platforms, Spotify is currently beta testing a new feature called "Artist Profile Protection." This tool enables artists to review and approve releases before they appear on their official profiles, giving them greater control over which tracks are linked to their name on the service.
In a recent blog post, Spotify addressed the growing issue of misattributed music, noting, "Music has been landing on the wrong artist pages across streaming services, and the rise of easy-to-produce AI tracks has made the problem worse." The company emphasized its commitment to resolving this, stating, "That’s not the experience we want artists to have on Spotify, and that’s why we’ve made protecting artist identity a top priority for 2026. Today, we’re announcing a first-of-its-kind solution to a problem that’s affected streaming for years."
Artists participating in the beta can review, approve, or decline releases submitted to Spotify. Only approved tracks will appear on their artist profile, contribute to their streaming statistics, or be included in user recommendations. This announcement follows closely on the heels of Sony Music's recent disclosure that it requested the removal of over 135,000 AI-generated songs impersonating its artists from various streaming platforms.

Spotify acknowledges that while open distribution has democratized music releases for independent artists, it also introduces risks for errors and misuse. Tracks can be incorrectly associated with an artist due to metadata mistakes, confusion between artists sharing similar names, or deliberate attempts to attach unauthorized music to a profile. "When that happens, it can impact your catalog, your stats, your Release Radar, and how fans discover your music," Spotify explains. The company adds, "We know how frustrating this can be for both artists and fans alike and one of the top requests we’ve heard from artists over the past year is that you want more visibility before music appears under your name."
The new feature is specifically designed for artists who have encountered repeated incorrect releases, those with common names, or anyone seeking tighter control over their profile content. Eligible artists in the beta will find the option within their "Spotify for Artists" settings on both desktop and mobile web. Once "Artist Profile Protection" is activated, artists will receive email notifications whenever music tagged with their name is delivered to Spotify, allowing them to promptly approve or decline each submission.
