Spotify is rolling out a new labeling system for AI-generated artists, introducing "AI Persona" profile tags while also removing their music from its editorial and algorithmic recommendation streams. The announcement came on Tuesday. Starting in mid-September, users will begin seeing "AI Persona" badges on certain artist profiles, clearly indicating that the identity behind the music is AI-generated rather than a real human being. While artists will have the option to self-identify as AI Personas, the company emphasized that it won't depend solely on voluntary disclosure.

In addition to self-reporting, Spotify will conduct its own reviews of artist profiles, flagging cases where names and imagery seem to represent photorealistic AI-created identities. The initial review phase will target profiles that have already reached certain audience thresholds, ensuring that the most-streamed artists are prioritized. Once tagged, the AI Persona badge will show up in multiple places: the artist's profile banner, the About section, Search results, and track rows across playlists. By default, AI Personas will be excluded from Spotify's editorial and algorithmic recommendations, and their music won't appear in personalized playlists—unless a user explicitly follows them. Following an artist is a deliberate action, so Spotify treats it as a clear signal that the listener wants more from that particular act.

This move marks the latest update to Spotify's AI policies, which lay out rules for how AI-generated music is handled on the platform. Those policies were first announced in September 2025 and already included measures to identify and label AI music using industry-standard methods, along with a ban on unauthorized AI voice clones and deepfakes. Like other players in the music industry, Spotify is walking a fine line: embracing AI-driven innovations—such as its own AI-powered Prompted Playlists, AI DJ, chat features, and upcoming AI remixes—while also trying to curb the flood of low-quality AI-generated content that has become easier to mass-produce. If that kind of "slop" is allowed to spread unchecked, it could hurt the user experience and lead to subscription cancellations. Spotify also noted that artists who believe they've been incorrectly labeled as AI Personas will have the ability to appeal the decision.

In its announcement, Spotify acknowledged the growing consumer pushback against AI-generated art, stating: "While we believe all artists have creative choice in determining how they present themselves, Spotify's programming is focused on elevating music from authentic artists building careers in music." However, the company was careful to clarify that the AI Persona label is about the artist's profile, not the music itself. "Although there's a broad spectrum in how artists use AI as a creative tool, the question of whether a profile represents an actual human is one where Spotify can help make a clear determination. This badge is about the artist's public identity, not about how the music was made," the company said. Details about how the music was produced will still be available through other Spotify features, including AI Credits and SongDNA. Looking ahead, Spotify will also introduce a tool in the coming months that lets users report artist profiles they believe are AI Personas but haven't yet been labeled. The new badges will also help users distinguish between AI Personas and the AI-generated remixes and covers that are soon to be allowed under Spotify's recent licensing deals with labels UMG and Merlin. Those agreements will permit fan-made remixes and covers while still directing royalties back to the original artists. As for the AI Persona labels themselves, artists will be able to self-disclose starting August 11, 2026, through Spotify for Artists, with the badges appearing on profiles beginning next month.
