Starcloud Raises $250M to Build AI-Powered Orbital Data Centers, Valued at $2.3B

The funding extension brings the company’s valuation to $2.3 billion. With this fresh capital, the startup plans to scale up by opening a larger manufacturing site and pushing forward on its most ambitious project yet—Starcloud-3, an orbital data center spacecraft designed to ride aboard SpaceX’s upcoming Starship rocket. CEO Philip Johnston is also stockpiling resources to lock in launch capacity while the market for rockets grows increasingly competitive.
Starcloud has already filed with the FCC for permission to operate 88,000 satellites. “We want to get under contract with things like Starship as soon as we can,” Johnston said. “One of the biggest costs is now on securing your launch capacity…. launch is pretty constrained right now because [SpaceX’s] Falcon 9 program is scheduled to end in 2028.”
Launch expenses have long been a major hurdle for orbital data center startups—so much so that one competitor has resorted to building its own rockets. SpaceX’s plan to retire its dependable Falcon 9 and transition to the far larger, yet still unproven, Starship adds another layer of uncertainty for satellite operators. The situation is compounded by the fact that other rockets, such as Blue Origin’s New Glenn and ULA’s Vulcan, aren’t yet flying on a regular basis, while newer vehicles like Rocket Lab’s Neutron have yet to reach the launchpad.
For now, Starcloud is concentrating on sending two of its next-generation 8 kW compute satellites, called Starcloud-2, on rideshare missions in 2027. These spacecraft will handle orbital inference tasks for clients, including U.S. government agencies. The company is also weighing the option of purchasing a dedicated Falcon 9 launch to deploy additional satellites, and is in talks with other launch providers to secure capacity for future missions.
Ultimately, Starcloud’s business model hinges on Starship’s ability to slash launch costs enough to make an orbital inference layer competitive with ground-based data centers. Johnston says he’s still confident SpaceX can prove that the world’s most powerful rocket can be reused quickly and often. This week, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced that the company would delay catching a returning Starship booster for a few months, with the first re-flight attempt now targeted for late 2026 or early 2027. “Obviously if we can’t book any SpaceX launch capacity in 2029, that will be challenging for us,” Johnston acknowledged.
The funding extension was spearheaded by Manhattan West Ventures, with participation from Nvidia and Cisco. A source familiar with the deal noted that Nvidia contributed $25 million. Other backers included Benchmark, EQT, Soma, NFX, 776, Cedar Capital, Goanna Capital, and Standard Capital. Johnston highlights Nvidia’s involvement as a strong vote of confidence in Starcloud’s position within the emerging space compute sector.
Starcloud is currently the only known company operating an Nvidia H100 terrestrial data center GPU in orbit, and it holds the distinction of being the first to train a model using it. Most other space-grade GPUs are built for edge processing, making Starcloud’s achievement a notable milestone. The company is sharing its findings with Nvidia as the chipmaker develops its first purpose-built GPU for space, the Vera Rubin Space-1 chip. “They, more than any other VC, did way more technical duty on this than anybody else,” Johnston said.
The space-ready chip hasn’t been manufactured yet, but Starcloud aims to launch it into orbit by late 2028. Johnston says his engineering team is closely monitoring several critical design considerations: how the chip’s operating temperature relates to the size of the radiators needed to dissipate heat, where to place radiation shielding, and the ruggedization required to withstand the intense vibrations of a rocket launch.
The company, which currently employs 25 people and is expanding, is setting up production lines at a 100,000-square-foot facility in Woodinville, Washington—located near where SpaceX and Amazon build satellites for their own communications networks.
