Stripe Acquires OpenRouter: AI Model Routing Platform Deal Finalized

Stripe has officially closed a deal to acquire OpenRouter, according to a new report from Bloomberg. OpenRouter is a platform that helps users choose between various AI models to handle different tasks, tailored to their specific requirements and budget. Back in May, the company announced it had raised a $113 million Series B round, which valued it at roughly $1.3 billion. Its backers include Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Alphabet’s Capital G.
At the time of that funding announcement, OpenRouter’s CEO, Alex Atallah, described the company as “Stripe for AI,” since it offers a single gateway to multiple AI systems, helping customers avoid being locked into one provider. The startup also said it had around 8 million users worldwide and gave access to more than 400 different models. Last month, The Wall Street Journal reported that Stripe and OpenRouter were already in acquisition discussions. Now, Bloomberg indicates those talks have resulted in a deal valued at over $7 billion.
