The Pentagon has rolled out specialized versions of OpenAI's ChatGPT and xAI's Grok, granting approximately 3 million civilian and military staff access to generative AI tools customized to meet "warfighter needs."

These new offerings—ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government—are adapted versions of the widely used consumer AI platforms and have been integrated into GenAI.mil, a secure and centralized portal introduced last year. When GenAI.mil first launched, it featured Google Gemini. The portal is intended to provide Department of Defense employees with access to cutting-edge commercial AI models while ensuring sensitive government data doesn't pass through standard consumer channels. Notably, the official military versions are designed to bypass the data collection practices that are common in consumer tech products.

According to the Department of Defense, the generative AI portal has seen significant adoption. Out of the department's 3 million personnel, more than 1.7 million unique users have already been onboarded onto GenAI.mil. These latest additions are part of a broader Pentagon initiative to leverage AI tools for accelerating workflows and maintaining a strategic advantage without compromising security. The move also underscores the notable absence of Anthropic's Claude model, reflecting the department's efforts to collaborate with other companies following a dispute with the frontier lab. Anthropic was flagged as a supply-chain risk by the Trump administration—a designation it is currently challenging in court—after the company declined to grant the Pentagon unrestricted access to its AI tools, instead insisting on specific safety safeguards.

ChatGPT Mil, developed through OpenAI's Government program, will deliver an experience familiar to existing ChatGPT users. The Defense Department notes that the tool will emphasize features like chat, file handling, projects, and custom GPTs. It is also designed to support document-heavy, routine unclassified tasks, including administrative duties, logistics, planning, and policy work, with additional capabilities expected to roll out over time.

In contrast, the Pentagon framed Grok's capabilities and potential applications in broader, more defense-oriented terms. “Starshield AI's Grok for Government will provide the warfighter with immediate productivity gains, stronger knowledge continuity and more secure and efficient collaboration,” the Defense Department stated in its press release. (Starshield AI, a SpaceX venture, operates a secure satellite network built on the company's existing Starlink technology.)

The department further explained that Grok would enable the military "to execute missions faster and with greater precision across numerous operational contexts, ranging from market research analysis for acquisition professionals to supply chain management for logisticians."

Beyond these additions, the Pentagon has established partnerships with several other technology firms—including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Reflection AI—as part of its broader push to enhance its AI capabilities.
