Pixar's 'Toy Story 5' Reveals a Sinister AI Tablet as the New Villain

In 1995, when the original Toy Story film premiered, Google had not yet been founded and Apple was teetering on the edge of financial collapse. Few could have foreseen that more than three decades later, Pixar would still be producing Toy Story films, or that the newest chapter would feature Buzz Lightyear and a now-balding Woody facing off against a malevolent AI tablet named Lilypad. Yet, Toy Story 5 does exactly that, setting classic toys such as Mrs. Potato Head, Rex, and Slinky Dog against the menacing advance of modern technology.

The trailer introduces Bonnie, the young girl who received Andy’s toys when he went off to college in Toy Story 2, playing outdoors with her beloved companions. Her attention is abruptly captured by the arrival of a mysterious package containing the Lilypad tablet. Instantly captivated, Bonnie becomes so absorbed in the device that she ignores her parents’ reminders that screen time has ended.

In the preview, the Lilypad—or Lily—is portrayed as a distinctly sinister antagonist. When Jessie confronts the tablet about Bonnie’s well-being, Lily appears indifferent, prompting the cowgirl to insist that it pay attention.

“I’m always listening,” Lily responds in a chilling, synthesized voice, echoing Jessie’s emotional plea before translating it into Spanish. “Tech’s invaded our house,” Jessie tells Woody anxiously. “I’m losing Bonnie to this device.”

Woody somberly replies, “Toys are for play, but tech is for everything.”

Whether Toy Story 5 will truly tug at the heartstrings of young viewers and encourage them to reflect on the impact of excessive screen time remains an open question. That outcome might be optimistic. Still, the film at least offers an alternative to watch—something far less mind-numbing than Cocomelon.
