Uber CEO Reveals Engineers Replaced Him With AI Chatbot For Meeting Prep

While many people likely view Uber primarily as a ride-hailing and food delivery service, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi sees the company differently. He describes Uber as essentially a massive code base, with engineers serving as "literally the builders of the company."
In a recent interview on Steven Barlett’s podcast *The Diary of a CEO*, Khosrowshahi shared a notable example of how deeply integrated technology has become within the company’s culture. He revealed that some engineering teams have developed a chatbot version of him, called "Dara AI," which they use to practice presentations before meeting with senior leadership.
"One of my team members told me that some teams have built a Dara AI, you know, so that they basically make the presentation to the Dara AI as a prep for making a presentation to me," Khosrowshahi explained. He noted that by the time proposals reach him, the slide decks are typically highly polished, and teams use the AI to fine-tune their preparation.
Khosrowshahi also provided insight into how widely artificial intelligence is being adopted among Uber’s technical staff. He stated that approximately 90% of the company’s software engineers are currently using AI in their work. Within that group, about 30% are considered "power users" who are leveraging AI tools to fundamentally rethink and reshape the company’s architecture.
"They are manufacturing the bricks that go into the system, and they’re architects who are kind of thinking about what the system should look like," he said. Reflecting on the impact, Khosrowshahi emphasized, "It really is changing their productivity in a way that I’ve never, ever seen before."
