Apple reportedly developing AirPods with cameras for privacy-focused AI features

AI wearables with built-in cameras are starting to earn a questionable reputation. Products like Meta’s Ray-Bans, for instance, have sparked worries about people being filmed without their knowledge. So the news that Apple is reportedly working on AirPods with cameras might seem at odds with the company’s carefully crafted image as a champion of user privacy. But the leaked details surrounding these rumored earbuds suggest they may not be as unsettling as they initially appear.
According to reports, the camera-equipped AirPods were spotted in video footage hidden within Apple’s macOS 26.7 RC—the “release candidate,” or the final test build before a public launch. In the clip, a man wearing AirPods holds up a book and appears to chat with Siri about it. The accompanying audio explains: “With Visual Intelligence, your world becomes savable. See something you like. Just ask me to save it for later.”
Further confirmation comes from code that references a “Hair Detected” error, which would alert users if their hair happens to cover the AirPods’ camera. If Apple doesn’t handle this rollout carefully, it could easily backfire.
For a brand built on trust, this is a much riskier move than a typical hardware refresh. Right now, AirPods feel like a seamless iPhone accessory that people wear all day without giving it a second thought. Adding cameras could suddenly put them front and center in people’s minds, making everyone wonder if the person across from them is secretly recording. Based on earlier reporting, though, Apple seems to have anticipated these concerns. According to a previous report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the camera-equipped AirPods won’t actually be able to record photos or video. As Gurman put it:
“The cameras essentially act as eyes for the Siri digital assistant and aren’t designed to take photos or video. These components—located in both the right and left earbuds—allow the device to capture visual information in low resolution.”
In other words, the goal isn’t to turn one of Apple’s best-selling accessories into a surveillance tool (lest they become “pervert pods”). Instead, it’s about giving AirPods owners a way to interact with the upgraded Siri AI, which is expected to arrive in September alongside iOS 27 and other software updates. That means a wearer could glance at something—like a book, as shown in the leaked video, or perhaps ingredients for a meal they’re about to cook, per Gurman’s earlier reporting—and simply ask Siri for assistance. The feature could also prove handy for turn-by-turn walking directions in an unfamiliar city.
For Apple, the larger strategic bet is that this could nudge consumers toward a future that’s less reliant on pulling out an iPhone throughout the day—if not entirely screen-free. By weaving AI access into a familiar, socially acceptable wearable, Apple’s customers could engage with the world in a more natural way than staring down at a glowing display. There is one catch, though. Gurman also noted that the new AirPods would feature an LED indicator that lights up whenever the device is sending visual data to the cloud. He questioned how visible that light would be, given the AirPods’ tiny size, but either way, its presence could work against Apple. While it’s the right call from a transparency and privacy standpoint, that LED risks visually grouping AirPods with other AI wearables already facing public distrust, like the Meta Ray-Bans, Snap’s Specs, or Google’s new AI glasses. Apple can control what the cameras actually do, but it will have far less control over what people assume they do.
