Wikipedia Bans AI-Generated Text in Major Editorial Policy Shift

As artificial intelligence becomes more integrated into editorial and media environments, online platforms are actively developing guidelines for its application. This week, Wikipedia implemented a prohibition on editors using AI to produce text, though it did not completely exclude AI from the site's editorial workflow.

A recent policy revision now specifies that "the use of LLMs to generate or rewrite article content is prohibited." This updated wording replaces and clarifies an earlier, more ambiguous guideline which indicated that LLMs "should not be used to generate new Wikipedia articles from scratch."

The role of AI in Wikipedia content has sparked significant debate within the platform's extensive, volunteer-based editing community. Reports indicate the new policy, which was submitted to a vote among editors, received strong approval with a tally of 40 in favor and 2 opposed.

Importantly, the updated guidelines still allow for limited AI assistance in certain editorial tasks. The policy permits editors to "use LLMs to suggest basic copyedits to their own writing, and to incorporate some of them after human review, provided the LLM does not introduce content of its own." It further cautions that "caution is required, because LLMs can go beyond what you ask of them and change the meaning of the text such that it is not supported by the sources cited."
