Google Launches "Switching Tools" to Steal Users from Rival AI Chatbots

In the competitive landscape of AI chatbots, major providers are fiercely vying for user engagement. In a strategic move, Google has introduced a feature that simplifies the process for individuals to switch from competing services to its Gemini assistant. The company unveiled "switching tools" on Thursday—specialized widgets that enable the transfer of personal "memories" and complete chat histories from other AI platforms directly into Gemini.

This system allows users to seamlessly share important personal details, such as key preferences, relationships, and individual context. The goal is to lower the barrier to adopting Google's AI by eliminating the need for users to spend extensive time re-educating Gemini about their identity and preferences.
The memory transfer operates through a guided prompt: Gemini suggests a query for the user to input into their current chatbot. That chatbot then generates a response containing the relevant personal information, which the user can copy and paste back into Gemini. This method not only instructs users on what details are valuable for Gemini to know but also streamlines the process of importing that data into Google's system.
"Once you import these memories, Gemini will understand the same key facts you’ve shared with other apps, like your interests, your sibling’s name, or where you grew up," Google explains. "Instead of starting over from scratch, you can quickly get Gemini up to speed on what matters most to you."
For importing entire chat histories, the process involves uploading a zip file. Exporting chat logs in this format is a straightforward feature supported by most major chatbots, including ChatGPT and Claude. This capability lets users "seamlessly pick up right where you left off," according to Google, who also notes that these imported chats remain searchable.
Currently, ChatGPT dominates the consumer chatbot sector, with OpenAI recently reporting 900 million weekly active users. Despite Google's significant distribution advantages—such as Gemini's default integration on Android devices and within the Chrome browser—it has trailed in user adoption. Last month, during Alphabet's fourth-quarter earnings call, Google shared that Gemini has surpassed 750 million monthly active users. This new switching initiative is a clear effort to help Google narrow that gap.
