Zoom Unveils AI Avatars and Productivity Suite for Enhanced Virtual Meetings

Zoom has announced that its AI-powered avatars, capable of representing users in online meetings, will launch later this month. The company also revealed several other new tools and services, including its own AI Docs, Slides, and Sheets applications, an AI agent builder designed for non-technical users, and a voice translator for meetings. These AI-powered productivity apps are scheduled to enter a preview phase this spring.

First announced last year, the long-awaited AI avatars are photorealistic and designed to mimic a user's appearance, expressions, and lip and eye movements. According to Zoom, the technology learns from a user's actions when they are not "camera-ready" and can function in both live online meetings and the company's asynchronous video messaging platform. Alongside this feature, Zoom is introducing a deepfake detection system for meetings to warn participants of potential audio or video impersonation.

The new suite of AI office apps, which includes AI Docs, Slides, and Sheets, allows users to generate document drafts, spreadsheets, and presentations by leveraging data from meeting transcripts and other connected services.

In other updates, Zoom is rolling out AI Companion 3.0 to its desktop application, following its initial web launch in September. The company reported that monthly active users for the AI Companion more than tripled in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2026 compared to the previous year. The AI assistant will also be integrated into Workvivo, Zoom's employee communication platform. This assistant can connect to various external services—including Slack, Salesforce, ServiceNow, Gmail, Outlook, Asana, and Jira—enabling users to query information across different knowledge bases.

Zoom is entering a competitive space with its AI-first office software, joining established players like Canva and newer startups such as Context. Similarly, Slack, owned by Salesforce, has been enhancing its team communication apps with more AI capabilities.

To cater to the rising demand for agentic workflows, Zoom now allows users to build custom AI agents using simple natural language prompts that operate across different platforms. Once created, these agents can be mentioned in chat to complete tasks. For developers, the company is releasing speech, vision, and language intelligence APIs that support both on-premises and cloud deployment.

Additionally, Zoom is enhancing its chat interface by using AI to highlight key insights and summarize conversation threads. To streamline the user experience, the company plans to unify the design across desktop, mobile, and web interfaces, making AI tools like meeting notes, question logs, and transcriptions more easily accessible.
