Jack Clark, co-founder of Anthropic and Head of Public Benefit for Anthropic PBC, confirmed that the AI firm provided a briefing to the Trump administration regarding its new Mythos model. Introduced last week, the model is considered too hazardous for public release, primarily due to its reported advanced cybersecurity potential. During an interview at Semafor’s World Economy summit this week, Clark clarified why the company continues to engage with the U.S. government despite an ongoing legal dispute. In March, Anthropic initiated a lawsuit against the Trump administration’s Department of Defense after the agency classified the company as a supply chain risk. The conflict stemmed from disagreements over whether the military should have open access to Anthropic’s AI systems for applications such as mass surveillance of U.S. citizens and fully autonomous weaponry. (The contract ultimately went to OpenAI instead.)

At the summit, Clark minimized the significance of the supply chain risk designation, describing it as a “narrow contracting dispute” and emphasizing that Anthropic remains committed to national security. “Our position is the government has to know about this stuff, and we have to find new ways for the government to partner with a private sector that is making things that are truly revolutionizing the economy, but are going to have aspects to them which hit National Security, equities, and other ones,” Clark stated. “So absolutely, we talked to them about Mythos, and we’ll talk to them about the next models as well.”

Clark’s confirmation follows recent reports that Trump administration officials were urging major banks—including JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Bank of America, and Morgan Stanley—to evaluate the Mythos model. During the interview, Clark also touched on broader societal impacts of AI, such as unemployment and higher education. While Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has previously cautioned that AI advancements could lead to unemployment rates reminiscent of the Great Depression, Clark offered a slightly different perspective. He explained that Amodei’s forecasts are based on the expectation that AI will become far more powerful, much faster, than most anticipate. Clark, who oversees a team of economists at Anthropic, noted that the company has so far observed only “some potential weakness in early graduate employment” within certain industries, but added that Anthropic is prepared should more significant workforce disruptions occur.

When asked what fields of study college students should consider or avoid in light of AI’s influence, Clark suggested broadly that the most valuable majors are those that “involve synthesis across a whole variety of subjects and analytical thinking about that.”

“That’s because what AI allows us to do is it allows you to have access to sort of an arbitrary amount of subject matter experts in different domains,” Clark remarked. “But the really important thing is knowing the right questions to ask and having intuitions about what would be interesting if you collided different insights from many different disciplines.”
