Google Chrome Launches 'Skills' Feature to Save and Reuse AI Prompts Across Websites

Google announced on Tuesday that it is enhancing its Chrome web browser with additional AI functionalities. A new capability called Skills will enable users to save and reuse their preferred AI prompts, allowing these commands to function across various websites without needing to be retyped. This development builds on Google's existing integration of its Gemini AI into Chrome, which was introduced alongside a wave of new AI-powered browser competitors from firms such as OpenAI (Atlas), Perplexity (Comet), and The Browser Company (Dia). Gemini already supports asking questions about a webpage, summarizing content, and completing other tasks. The Skills feature advances this by letting users create reusable AI prompts that can be activated with a single click. For example, if someone frequently asks Gemini to recommend vegan alternatives on recipe sites, they can now save that specific prompt and apply it seamlessly on different pages.

To use this feature, users can save an AI prompt as a Skill directly from their chat history. Once saved, the Skill can be reused in Gemini within Chrome by typing a forward slash ( / ) or clicking the plus sign ( + ) button. The command will then execute on the currently viewed webpage and any additional tabs that have been selected. Google also notes that these Skills can be edited at any time.

During testing, the company observed that early users applied Skills in domains like health and wellness—for instance, to compute protein macros in recipes—as well as for comparing shopping options or condensing long documents. To help users begin, Google is launching a Skills library featuring common tasks and workflows in areas such as productivity, shopping, recipes, and budgeting. To employ a pre-programmed Skill, users simply add it to their saved Skills in Chrome. Each Skill can also be personalized by editing the prompt to better suit individual needs.

Similar to other Gemini actions in Chrome, Skills will request user confirmation before performing certain tasks, like sending an email or adding a calendar event. The rollout for Skills starts today for Chrome desktop users who are signed into their Google accounts. Initially, the feature will only be available when the Chrome browser's language is set to English (US).
