Anthropic Launches Opus 5.5: New State-of-the-Art AI Model Debuts With Cheaper Pricing and Superior Coding Performance

Anthropic unveiled its latest model, Opus 5.5, on Tuesday, claiming it establishes a new benchmark for excellence in coding and knowledge-based tasks. The company highlighted that this release surpasses the larger Fable model across numerous benchmarks and even completed several informal tasks where Fable had fallen short. Additionally, the new model comes with a notably lower price tag than its predecessor. For Opus 5.5, output tokens are priced at $20 per mTok, down from $25 for the earlier version, with other pricing metrics showing similar reductions. It also operates more quickly, thanks to an overall decrease in compute demands. Beyond performance and cost, Opus 5.5 introduces notable shifts in how it communicates—it's less prone to using technical jargon and tends to lead with key information in its responses. This launch follows just two months after Opus 5 debuted on July 24th. Per the announcement, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 are slated for release "in the coming weeks," bringing comparable performance enhancements. Anthropic notes that Opus 5.5 matches Mythos in biology and cybersecurity abilities, so it falls under the same safety protocols as the company's Fable model. These protocols restrict the models' use for tasks like finding vulnerabilities in compiled code or creating identifiable biological threats, among others. Opus 5.5 marks Anthropic's first model rollout since CEO Dario Amodei supported efforts to slow the pace of frontier AI development, intentionally moderating capability advancements to align with progress in safety and alignment. "I have become convinced that fully addressing the risks requires even more prudence," Amodei stated in a post earlier this month, "not just investing in risk prevention, but pacing the rate of capabilities advancement so that risk prevention has time to keep up."
The safety training for Opus 5.5 largely mirrored that of its forerunners, involving alignment checks and pre-release assessments from external groups such as METR and Frontier Design. However, Anthropic stressed that it is already developing more sophisticated training and evaluation frameworks for upcoming models, which include enhanced security and monitoring features. "As AI becomes more capable, public policy should play a larger role in making sure the systems people rely on are safe. That capacity takes time to build, and we've started to put the infrastructure in place to support it," the blog post explains. "We expect to share more details on these efforts soon."
