Anthropic Launches Claude Science: An AI Workbench to Streamline Computational Research for Scientists

Anthropic unveiled Claude Science on Tuesday, a specialized AI workbench designed to give scientists a single environment for conducting computational research. This eliminates the inconvenience of constantly switching between databases, pipelines, and various tools. It's important to note that Anthropic clarifies Claude Science is "not a new AI model and not a more capable model for biology. It runs the same Claude models already available to everyone today (including Claude Opus 4. 8), with no special access and no gating."
The workbench builds upon Anthropic's October 2025 release of Claude for Life Sciences, which enhanced the Claude chatbot to perform better on life science tasks. Now, Claude Science provides a dedicated space for this work. Announced during an AI for Science briefing on Tuesday, this launch is part of Anthropic's broader strategy to evolve beyond being just a model provider. The company aims to own the operating layer for specific industries, much like Claude Code has become the operating layer for software development. Increasingly, Anthropic is betting its growth on vertical, workflow-level products rather than relying solely on raw model capability—a move that could influence how it competes and prices its offerings against rivals.
Here's how it functions: A main AI assistant acts as a project manager for scientists, connecting to over 60 scientific databases and coming with pre-built toolkits for fields like genomics, protein structure, and chemistry. This assistant can then create sub-assistants to delegate tasks, similar to a project lead assigning work to specialists. Alternatively, it can hand off tasks to a custom "expert" assistant built by the user for their specific research. A separate fact-checker AI then reviews citations and calculations before anything is published. This fact-checking step is crucial, as AI-assisted writing has led to fabricated citations and unverifiable statistics in papers. However, it's worth noting that the same underlying model is checking itself, not an independent source of truth.
Anthropic states that Claude Science includes other features to ensure reproducibility. For instance, the workbench can generate figures like 3D protein structures and chemistry diagrams alongside the code that created them. Each figure includes "the exact code and environment that produced it, a plain-language description of how it was created, and the full message history," according to the company. This process also saves scientists time by allowing them to edit figures using plain language, prompting the agent to modify its underlying code. Another time-saving aspect is that Claude Science can run on the lab's own infrastructure rather than sending data to Anthropic's servers.
Early users are already finding practical applications. Sean Whalen, a principal scientist in machine learning and functional genomics at Gladstone Institutes, used Claude Science to build a genome browser from scratch in just a few days, according to Anthropic. Allen Institute neuroscientist Jérôme Lecoq employed the tool to create a multi-agent computational review pipeline.
The launch of Claude Science comes a few months after OpenAI approached the same challenge from a different angle. In April, OpenAI released GPT-Rosalind, a specialized model fine-tuned for biological reasoning. The key difference between the two approaches goes beyond whether a specialized model is necessary; it also involves access and speed. Rosalind launched as a research preview limited to qualified enterprise customers in the U.S., gated behind a qualification and safety review. Partners like Amgen, Allen Institute, Moderna, Thermo Fisher, and Novo Nordisk got early access.
Then there's Google DeepMind, which is playing a completely different game. DeepMind owns foundational science models like AlphaFold and AlphaGenome, which the other companies can only use as tools. Its Gemini for Science platform bundles these models with over 30 life science databases into one skill set. The net result is that three very different distribution strategies are now competing for the same scientific research market: Anthropic is going wide with broad subscription access, OpenAI is going narrow and enterprise-gated, and Google is leveraging proprietary models that no one else has. How this unfolds could serve as an early indicator for how AI vendors compete in other specialized verticals like law, finance, and engineering in the future.
Claude Science is available in beta to anyone on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscriptions. Anthropic also named Novo Nordisk and Allen Institute as customer case studies, suggesting that pharmaceutical organizations are already working with multiple AI vendors. Additionally, Anthropic will support up to 50 Claude Science projects, providing up to $30,000 in credits: "We are looking for postdoctoral and graduate projects that span domains and explore the boundaries of science, with an early focus on fields across biomedical research. Applications are open through July 15, 2026, with award notifications sent out by July 31. Projects will run from September 1 to December 1, 2026."
