If founders and business leaders weren’t already jealous of Dario Amodei—who leads one of the fastest-growing AI companies in the world, valued by private market investors at roughly a trillion dollars just over five years after its founding—they’ll certainly feel envious now. In a recent interview with Bloomberg’s Emily Chang, Amodei revealed that he has only one direct report: his chief of staff. Everyone else on Anthropic’s executive team reports to his sister, co-founder and President Daniela Amodei, who manages day-to-day operations.

Anyone who has led a large team knows that the people side of the job can easily consume everything else. Amodei’s arrangement frees him to focus almost entirely on strategy, culture, research direction, and sweeping essays about the future of civilization (complete with footnotes). “It’s incredibly freeing,” he told Chang.

This is a highly unusual structure. For comparison, OpenAI’s Sam Altman reportedly has around half a dozen direct reports, which is far more typical. Meanwhile, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang—another extreme outlier—has many dozens.
