Anthropic Engages Trump Administration Amid Pentagon Supply-Chain Risk Designation

Despite recently being designated a supply-chain risk by the Pentagon, Anthropic continues to engage with senior officials in the Trump administration. Earlier indications of a potential easing in tensions—or at least a divergence in views within the government—emerged with reports that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell were urging major bank leaders to experiment with Anthropic’s new Mythos model. Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark appeared to support this perspective, describing the ongoing conflict over the supply-chain risk label as a “narrow contracting dispute” that would not hinder the company from briefing government agencies on its latest AI developments.

Then on Friday, Axios reported that Bessent and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles had met with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. The White House characterized the encounter as an “introductory meeting” that was “productive and constructive.”

“We discussed opportunities for collaboration, as well as shared approaches and protocols to address the challenges associated with scaling this technology,” the White House stated. Anthropic similarly confirmed in a statement that Amodei had met with “senior administration officials for a productive discussion on how Anthropic and the U.S. government can work together on key shared priorities such as cybersecurity, America’s lead in the AI race, and AI safety.”

The company added that it is “looking forward to continuing these discussions.”

The rift between Anthropic and the Pentagon appears to have originated from unsuccessful negotiations regarding the military’s use of Anthropic’s AI models. The company insisted on maintaining safeguards to prevent its technology from being used in fully autonomous weapons or mass domestic surveillance programs. Notably, OpenAI soon after announced its own military agreement, which sparked some backlash from consumers.

Following the breakdown in talks, the Pentagon classified Anthropic as a supply-chain risk—a designation typically applied to foreign adversaries that could significantly restrict the government’s ability to use Anthropic’s models. Anthropic is currently contesting this label in court. However, it seems other parts of the Trump administration do not share the Pentagon’s stance. According to an administration source speaking to Axios, “every agency” except the Department of Defense is interested in utilizing the company’s technology.
