AI Boom Sparks Record App Launches, Defying Industry Predictions

Contrary to predictions that AI would render them obsolete, mobile app launches are experiencing a dramatic surge. Fresh data from market intelligence firm Appfigures reveals that global app releases in the first quarter of 2026 jumped 60% year-over-year on both the iOS App Store and Google Play. The growth was even more pronounced on iOS alone, reaching 80%. For April 2026 so far, total releases are up 104% across both platforms compared to the same period last year, and 89% on iOS. As Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, Greg “Joz” Joswiak, remarked in a recent interview, rumors of the App Store’s demise in the AI era “may have been greatly exaggerated.”

This data emerges alongside industry concerns that AI chatbots and agents might lead users to abandon traditional apps—a view shared by figures like Nothing CEO Carl Pei, who is developing a smartphone for the AI age. Reports have also suggested new computing platforms, such as smart glasses or AI-enhanced wearables, could eventually surpass the smartphone. Projects like OpenAI’s collaboration with former Apple designer Jony Ive on an AI hardware device feed this narrative. However, an alternative possibility is gaining traction: AI could democratize app development, fueling a renaissance for app stores by enabling creators with ideas but no coding expertise to build software. Appfigures' breakdown shows that while mobile games continue to dominate new releases worldwide as of Q1 2026, the rankings of other categories have shifted notably. “Productivity” apps have entered the top five, “utilities” has risen to the number two spot, and “lifestyle” apps have moved from fifth to third place. “Health and fitness” applications complete the current top five categories.

A leading theory is that AI-powered development tools, such as Claude Code or Replit, are driving this increase in launches. We may be reaching a tipping point in AI usability, making it easier for individuals to quickly build their desired mobile applications, even if they have no prior experience. This flood of new submissions could also be contributing to some recent high-profile oversight issues at Apple. The company recently removed the rewards app Freecash for rules violations after it spent months in the Top Charts, and was caught off guard by a malicious cryptocurrency app clone that stole $9.5 million. Despite such incidents, Apple continues to block a significant volume of harmful software. The company's 2024 analysis noted it removed or rejected over 17,000 apps for bait-and-switch violations, rejected more than 320,000 spammy or copycat submissions, and prevented over 37,000 potentially fraudulent apps from reaching the store. Nevertheless, commentators like John Gruber have long argued for a dedicated "bunco squad" to proactively police popular or high-grossing scams. If AI-assisted development is indeed behind the app surge, the need for such vigilance will only intensify as more apps—not all of them benign—enter the marketplace.
