Apple Announces New AI Music Disclosure Rules for Labels and Distributors

Apple Music is introducing new options for record labels and distributors to identify AI-generated or AI-assisted content when uploading to the service. In a newsletter sent to industry partners on Wednesday, the company outlined plans to implement additional metadata fields aimed at increasing transparency regarding the use of AI in music.
Metadata typically includes details such as song titles, album names, genres, and artist information, which help organize and categorize music files. The new update will allow distributors to apply specific tags indicating whether AI was involved in creating a song’s artwork, audio track, lyrics, or music video.
This move appears to align with listener interest—a Reddit user recently shared a concept mock-up for a similar feature. However, the effectiveness of this approach relies on labels and distributors voluntarily choosing to disclose their use of AI, as the system is opt-in.
Spotify is pursuing a comparable strategy, while other platforms like Deezer are experimenting with in-house AI detection tools. Developing such systems with high accuracy continues to present significant technical challenges.
