Apple unveils Siri AI with dedicated app at WWDC 2026, transforming voice assistant into an AI companion with real-world knowledge

Two years after Apple promised—but failed to deliver—a smarter Siri, the company finally unveiled its completely revamped, AI-powered assistant at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2026) on Monday. Dubbed “Siri AI,” this upgrade aims to transform Siri from a simple voice-controlled helper into a full-fledged AI companion capable of far more. The new assistant will launch alongside a dedicated Siri app. It can draw on current world knowledge to ground its answers, access information stored on a user’s device, and respond based on what’s currently displayed on the screen. With this update, Apple is turning Siri into a conversational AI chatbot designed to compete with popular platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. This marks a major shift for Siri, which has long been known primarily as a voice assistant. Now, when users ask for information, Siri will display text cards with results—such as web data or details from text messages. The assistant has also been redesigned for modern iPhones, now living in the Dynamic Island. Previously, triggering Siri caused the side of the phone’s screen to glow; with the updated version, a new animation appears in the Dynamic Island instead.

A new feature called “Write with Siri” allows users to get help composing text. When you use Siri to write in Mail and Messages, the assistant can adapt to how you typically communicate with a specific colleague or friend. For instance, if you usually send your manager short, direct bulletins, that’s exactly the style you’ll get when drafting an email with Siri. You can swipe down from the Dynamic Island to search or start a typed conversation with Siri, say “Hey Siri,” or use the side button to receive an in-depth answer. Users can now ask Siri to perform more complex tasks, like writing messages, by providing specific information and topics to cover. Siri will pull in data from the web, previous emails, your calendar, contacts, and more. Apple also says Siri has a brand-new voice experience, with the ability to speak at a customized pace and expressivity. Additionally, system-wide dictation has been updated with improved accuracy—capturing everything from spelling to punctuation and capitalization more precisely. With Siri AI, you can ask for a detailed plan, go back and forth in conversation, brainstorm ideas, get feedback on a document, and much more. On macOS, Siri is integrated into Spotlight, allowing you to tap into the assistant from anywhere and find answers to questions. On watchOS, users can ask questions and take action directly from their watch.
