OpenAI revealed on Wednesday that it's extending voice-driven agentic capabilities to mobile devices, enabling users to kick off workflows such as drafting documents or summarizing emails. Subscribers on the Plus and Pro tiers will gain access to a Work tab on their phones, where they can create documents, compose emails, or summarize Slack messages, among other tasks. These paid users can also build websites, put together presentations, use the cloud browser, and tap into other areas like finances within ChatGPT. Meanwhile, Free and Go tier users will be able to work with plugins and connected apps.

OpenAI noted that voice conversations in ChatGPT will now produce richer text output. Additionally, Plus users will have the ability to move seamlessly between text and voice. They can also begin a conversation while on the move and pick it back up later on desktop.

This feature launch comes as a growing number of people are using voice to give commands to AI assistants for increasingly complex tasks. Back in July, OpenAI introduced its new conversational model GPT-Live, and afterward wove it into the desktop app so users could rely on voice to finish tasks in the Work tab or build apps within the Codex tab. The latest rollout delivers comparable functionality to the mobile app.

Not long ago, Anthropic simplified the handoff between mobile and desktop while also merging its Cowork and Chat interface. OpenAI, however, continues to keep chat and workspaces as separate entities.
