Anthropic has introduced Voice Mode to Claude Code, its AI-powered coding assistant designed for developers. This addition represents a major advancement in enabling more conversational and hands-free programming workflows.

Engineer Thariq Shihipar revealed the feature's phased launch on X this Tuesday. He noted that Voice Mode is currently active for approximately 5% of users, with a wider release scheduled over the next few weeks.

The feature aims to simplify coding by allowing users to give spoken instructions to Claude Code. To activate it, developers can type `/voice` to turn on the mode, then simply speak their command—for example, saying “refactor the authentication middleware”—and Claude Code will carry out the task.

Specific details regarding the new capability's limits are not yet clear, such as whether there are restrictions on voice interaction length or other technical boundaries. It is also uncertain if the feature was developed with an external AI voice partner, like ElevenLabs, which Anthropic was previously said to be in discussions with.

Voice Mode was first released for the standard Claude chatbot last May, permitting voice-based interaction for general tasks. The market for AI coding assistants is highly competitive, with rivals including Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Google, and OpenAI all seeking developer adoption.

Despite this, Claude Code has emerged as one of the most popular tools currently available. In February, Anthropic shared that Claude Code’s run-rate revenue exceeded $2.5 billion, more than doubling since the start of 2026. Weekly active users have also doubled since January.

In related news, Claude’s mobile app experienced a significant surge in growth after the company declined to permit the Department of Defense to utilize its AI for domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons. Following that decision, the app quickly rose to the top of the U.S. App Store rankings, surpassing ChatGPT.
