X Announces Crackdown on AI-Generated War Videos, Suspends Revenue for Violators

X has announced it will penalize creators who share AI-generated videos depicting armed conflicts without clearly stating that the content is artificial. On Tuesday, Nikita Bier, the platform's head of product, explained that individuals using AI to mislead audiences in this manner will be removed from the Creator Revenue Sharing Program for three months. Should they persist in posting deceptive AI content after their suspension ends, they will be permanently banned from the program.

Bier emphasized the importance of reliable information during wartime, noting that current AI tools make it easy to produce misleading material. He stated, "During times of war, it is critical that people have access to authentic information on the ground. With today’s AI technologies, it is trivial to create content that can mislead people." The new rule takes effect immediately, targeting users who fail to disclose AI involvement in conflict-related videos.

To identify these posts, X will utilize a mix of AI detection tools and its Community Notes system, which relies on crowd-sourced fact-checking. The Creator Revenue Sharing Program allows creators to earn a portion of advertising revenue based on the popularity of their posts. Although intended to encourage engaging content, the program has faced criticism for potentially rewarding sensationalism, such as clickbait or outrage-driven posts.

Additional concerns have been raised about the program's minimal content controls and its requirement that creators must be paying subscribers to participate. While X's ban on financially rewarding undisclosed AI conflict videos addresses a specific issue, it remains a limited solution. Beyond warfare, AI-generated media is frequently used to spread political falsehoods or promote dubious products in the influencer space—practices that will still be permitted under this updated policy.
