Discord AI Moderation Bug Mistakenly Bans 8,000+ Users Over Harmless Images Like Spreadsheets

Discord has confirmed that a flaw in its AI moderation system led to the wrongful banning of more than 8,000 users over the past two months. The issue arose when harmless images—such as spreadsheets, chessboards, game textures, and white or gray transparent backgrounds—were mistakenly flagged as inappropriate content. The company noted that the problem had been impacting accounts since May, with an additional 200 users banned over the weekend before the team identified and resolved the glitch. All affected accounts are now being restored. This incident underscores the rising challenges of AI-assisted moderation, as many platforms increasingly depend on automated systems to detect illegal or abusive material at scale.

In a detailed thread on X, Discord explained that its automated safety system functions by comparing uploaded content against databases of known harmful material. While the technology is intended to catch illegal content, the company acknowledged that it can occasionally produce false positives. Normally, a human moderator reviews flagged content, but a bug caused the system to immediately ban affected accounts without that step. "We’re working on better safeguards so this can’t happen again," the company stated.

Across X and Reddit, users have reported being permanently suspended simply for uploading images with square grid patterns. Some speculated that Discord’s AI moderation tools have become overly sensitive to such patterns because they have been used in the past to hide or disguise NSFW and child exploitation content from automated detection. Affected users have voiced frustration on social media, arguing that permanent bans based solely on automated detection can have serious consequences—especially for those who rely on Discord for work, gaming communities, or maintaining long-distance relationships. "Losing a Discord account to something as unfair as this can be extremely devastating and affect users severely, and every day millions of users are affected by false AI bans. This needs to be stopped," one X user wrote.

Discord is not alone in facing moderation troubles tied to automated systems. Last year, users of Instagram and Facebook Groups reported widespread, unexplained account suspensions that many attributed to AI moderation errors. Although users pointed to automation as the likely cause, Meta never officially confirmed whether AI mistakes were responsible. Now, Meta’s Oversight Board is pushing for greater transparency. Tumblr also faced complaints last year from users who said their accounts had been mass-suspended without clear explanations.
