AI Coding Startup Factory Raises $150M at $1.5B Valuation to Challenge Industry Leaders

More than three years since generative AI first appeared, using AI to assist with coding continues to be its most widespread and profitable application. While several companies—such as Anthropic with Claude Code, along with Cursor and Cognition—are already competing for leadership, investors see an opening for at least another major contender.
On Wednesday, Factory, a startup that builds AI agents for enterprise engineering teams, disclosed it has secured $150 million in funding, achieving a valuation of $1.5 billion. The investment round was spearheaded by Khosla Ventures, with additional contributions from Sequoia Capital, Insight Partners, and Blackstone. Keith Rabois, a managing director at Khosla Ventures, has taken a seat on the startup’s board.
Factory’s founder, Matan Grinberg, highlighted to the Wall Street Journal that the company’s main advantage lies in its capacity to alternate between various foundational models, like Anthropic’s Claude or the Chinese AI firm DeepSeek. It’s worth noting, however, that other startups, including Cursor, also utilize multiple models for code generation.
Factory’s client roster features engineering teams at Morgan Stanley, Ernst & Young, and Palo Alto Networks. The startup originated in 2023 after Grinberg, then a PhD student at UC Berkeley, reached out to Sequoia partner Shaun Maguire via a cold email. The two discovered a shared academic background—Maguire holds a Ph.D. from Caltech in the same field of physics that Grinberg was researching.
Maguire persuaded Grinberg to leave his doctoral program and launch Factory, with Sequoia providing the initial seed funding to get the venture off the ground.
