Google is poised to add another major milestone to its collection of products that each serve over a billion users—a group that already includes Search, Gmail, Drive, Android, YouTube, and Chrome. During its Q2 2026 earnings call, the company revealed that its AI assistant, Gemini, now boasts more than 950 million monthly active users. This marks a threefold increase compared to last year. Back in February, Google had reported that the Gemini app had crossed 750 million monthly active users. With this rapid growth, Gemini is positioning itself as a stronger rival to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which reached 1 billion monthly active users in June.

“Users love new agentic features like Daily Brief and our personalized agent, Gemini Spark, which is now available in the U.S. and internationally. We’ve been shipping helpful new features like this at an incredible pace,” Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said during the call. Beyond its strong presence on Android, Gemini has also carved out a significant user base on iOS, thanks in part to launches like the Nano Banana image generation model. According to Appfigures, the Gemini app has been downloaded over 137 million times on iOS over the past year.

In its latest “State of AI” report, analytics firm Sensor Tower noted that ChatGPT’s market share among AI assistants fell below 50% for the first time. The report, which covered the first half of 2026, also highlighted that Gemini’s share climbed to 27.7%. Many users are now turning to AI assistant apps as a substitute for traditional search. However, Google reported that its search vertical remains strong, partly due to an AI-focused overhaul. During this quarter, its Q&A-style AI mode surpassed 1 billion users. The company stated that this feature is driving “an incremental increase” in search queries. Additionally, Google noted that through hardware engineering, it has reduced the cost of AI mode for the company, even as it continues to introduce new models and features.
