Google launches 'Preferred Sources' button letting readers boost favorite publishers in Search results

As AI continues to drive traffic away from websites, Google on Thursday extended a lifeline to publishers hit hard by the shift. The company now lets readers click a button on a publisher’s site to flag it as a “favorite source” they’d like to see prioritized across Google Search, Discover, and Google News. The tech giant announced that this new, interactive “Preferred Sources” button is being made available for online publishers to embed directly on their own pages.

The move follows Google’s introduction of Preferred Sources in May, which applied to its AI-driven experiences, including AI Mode and AI Overviews. Previously, the option was only accessible within Top Stories. The goal is to help readers more easily surface links from sites they recognize and trust when they search for information or turn to Google’s AI for news and answers. Since the May rollout, the company noted that users across the web had already selected more than 345,000 unique sources through this approach.

To designate a favorite publisher, you can head to Google’s source preferences page and look up a publisher by name or website. According to Google, becoming a preferred source can boost traffic to publishers’ sites. In earlier tests, the company found that people are twice as likely to click through to a preferred source when it’s available. By rolling out these extra tools, Google is aiming to soften the blow that the rapid rise of AI-powered search features has dealt to businesses that rely on web traffic.

Alongside the new button, Google said readers will soon be able to tailor their Discover feed in the Google app using their own words. To use this feature, users will tap the three-dot menu in the feed and then tell Google, in natural language, what topics they’d like to see more or less of. This allows Google to adjust the feed in real-time.

Google isn’t the only company leaning on AI to deliver feed-customization tools. Over the past few months, several major social media platforms have introduced user-controlled algorithms that let people fine-tune the content recommended to them. In addition to personalizing the Discover feed, Google says Android users will also be able to customize their audio daily briefings in the Google News app.
