Google Launches Free Offline AI Dictation App for iOS

Google has quietly launched a new offline-first dictation application called “Google AI Edge Eloquent” for iOS, positioning it to compete with apps such as Wispr Flow, SuperWhisper, and Willow. The free app allows users to begin dictating on their phone once its Gemma-based automatic speech recognition models are downloaded. It provides a live transcription view, and when dictation is paused, the app automatically removes filler words like “um” and “ah” and refines the text. Below the transcript, options like “Key points”, “Formal”, “Short”, and “Long” are available to modify the output.

Users can disable cloud mode to rely solely on local processing. When cloud mode is enabled, the app employs cloud-based Gemini models for text cleanup. Google AI Edge Eloquent can optionally import specific keywords, names, and jargon from a connected Gmail account, and custom words can also be added manually. The app maintains a history of transcription sessions, which are fully searchable, and displays metrics such as words from the latest session, words per minute speed, and total words spoken.

According to the company’s App Store description, “Google AI Edge Eloquent is an advanced dictation app engineered to bridge the gap between natural speech and professional, ready-to-use text. Unlike standard dictation software that transcribes stumbles and filler words verbatim, Eloquent utilizes AI to capture your intended meaning. It automatically edits out ‘ums,’ ‘uhs,’ and mid-sentence self-corrections, outputting clean, accurate prose.”

Although currently exclusive to iOS, the App Store description mentions an Android version, noting “seamless Android integration” that would allow it to be set as a default keyboard for system-wide access in any text field. The Android version is also expected to include a floating button feature, similar to Wispr Flow’s implementation, for convenient transcription access from anywhere.

As speech-to-text models continue to improve, AI-powered transcription apps are becoming increasingly popular among users. With this experimental release, Google is entering this growing trend. A successful test could lead to enhanced transcription features being integrated into Android as well.
