India's mobile app ecosystem is achieving unprecedented revenue levels, with in-app purchases exceeding $300 million in the first quarter, marking a 33% increase compared to the same period last year. However, a significant portion of this expenditure continues to benefit international platforms.

The primary growth engine for the quarter was non-gaming applications, which brought in over $200 million from in-app purchases. This represents a 44% annual rise and an expanding share of the total consumer spending. Key categories fueling this expansion include utility tools, video streaming services, and generative AI applications.

This advancement signals a wider transformation within the Indian market. Annual revenue from in-app purchases has climbed steadily from $520 million in 2021 to surpass $1 billion in 2025, with projections indicating it will reach $1.25 billion this year. Although annual app downloads have plateaued at approximately 25 billion, the time users spend within apps is consistently increasing. This trend points to more profound user engagement and a growing acceptance of paying for digital services.

The first quarter's spending was largely dominated by global giants. Top revenue earners included Google One, Facebook, ChatGPT, and YouTube. Domestic companies found stronger footing in the video streaming sector, with platforms like JioHotstar and SonyLIV achieving high rankings.

A comparable dynamic was visible in download figures. Leading apps by installations were ChatGPT, Instagram, and the Chinese short-drama platform FreeReels. They were followed by Indian applications such as Story TV, JioHotstar, and Meesho.

Despite this positive momentum, India's market remains characterized by relatively low spending. It generates roughly $0.03 in revenue per download, a figure notably lower than more established markets. While emerging categories are stimulating growth, consumer expenditure is still heavily focused on a few mature areas. Productivity tools, social media, and video streaming apps continue to dominate the top revenue charts, with video streaming alone representing about half of the top ten earners, highlighting its exceptional ability to generate income.

Nevertheless, evolving user preferences indicate potential for further expansion. Downloads of generative AI apps surged by 69% year-over-year, with ChatGPT ranking highly for both installations and revenue. India has consistently been ChatGPT's largest user base globally, and other AI applications are also gaining popularity. The growth of short-drama platforms is even more rapid, with downloads skyrocketing by over 400%, spearheaded by apps like FreeReels.

These patterns suggest that India's app market is still in the early phases of monetization, even as new and diverse categories begin to reshape what users are prepared to pay for.
