OpenAI Loses Key AI Researchers as It Shifts Focus to Enterprise and Superapp

OpenAI is seeing two key figures behind its most forward-thinking projects move on. Kevin Weil, who headed the company's science research initiative, and Bill Peebles, the researcher responsible for the AI video tool Sora, both revealed they are leaving on Friday. These departures arrive as the company focuses more intently on enterprise artificial intelligence and its upcoming "superapp."
The exits follow a broader shift at OpenAI to reduce investment in what it termed "side quests," which included public-facing ventures like Sora and OpenAI for Science. Sora, which was reportedly incurring roughly $1 million daily in computing expenses, was discontinued last month. OpenAI for Science was the internal group that developed Prism, an AI-driven platform designed to speed up scientific breakthroughs. According to Weil's social media announcement, this initiative is now being integrated into "other research teams." "It's been a mind-expanding two years, from Chief Product Officer to joining the research team and starting OpenAI for Science," Weil stated. "Accelerating science will be one of the most stunningly positive outcomes of our push to AGI."
The team experienced a brief and turbulent journey following its official launch in October 2025. Weil removed a social media post asserting that GPT-5 had solved ten previously unsolved Erdős mathematical problems, a claim that quickly unraveled when the mathematician managing the erdosproblems.com website challenged it. Weil's announcement comes just one day after his team introduced GPT-Rosalind, a new model aimed at advancing life sciences research and drug discovery.
In his own departure post, Peebles highlighted that Sora sparked a "huge amount of investment in video across the industry." He also contended that the type of exploratory work that led to the video tool needs freedom from the company's primary development path. "Cultivating entropy is the only way for a research lab to thrive long-term," he wrote.
