Mark Wahlberg Embraces AI in Filmmaking, Reveals Plans for AI Likeness to Continue His Legacy

Mark Wahlberg has weighed in on the debate surrounding AI in Hollywood, and his position is more nuanced than a simple for-or-against stance. The actor and director acknowledges that the industry remains split on the issue, but he sees a legitimate role for the technology—provided it's applied thoughtfully.

Wahlberg revealed that he's considering using AI to enhance specific elements of his upcoming Pete Rose biopic, a project in which he'll take on the lead role. He described the film as "fairly expensive" and explained that the technology could be leveraged to improve the stadium environments and similar visual components.

Still, Wahlberg draws a clear line. He rejected the notion of feeding a concept into ChatGPT, generating a script, and producing a film without real actors. In his view, AI is acceptable when it elevates existing work rather than replacing the human element entirely.

The actor also stressed that storytelling must remain the foundation of filmmaking. Reflecting on his own career, Wahlberg recalled working on effects-heavy productions during a period he considers a technological sweet spot—the era of the first Jurassic Park and The Perfect Storm, with its memorable 100-foot wave featured in the trailer. Those, he said, represented genuine cutting-edge achievements in computer-generated imagery. Today, he finds that level of innovation harder to achieve, which is why he's less drawn to effects-driven projects and more committed to authentic storytelling.

Looking ahead, Wahlberg expressed enthusiasm about the possibility that his children or grandchildren might one day manage his likeness and image, ideally casting him in quality films. He called the prospect "cool" and said he's curious to see how the technology develops.

He extended that openness to his animated series "Ted," saying he wouldn't object if an AI version of his likeness kept the show going for decades. If he's no longer able to perform or is no longer alive, and audiences still want more, he finds the idea intriguing. He compared it to things from his own childhood that he wishes had endured, and reiterated that he wouldn't stand in the way. In his view, people will have enormous opportunities to watch whatever they desire, and if a genuine audience exists for something, they deserve access to it.
