Mecka AI Nears $500M Valuation in New Funding Round Led by Sequoia Capital to Train Humanoid Robots

Mecka AI, a company focused on gathering and processing human motion data to train humanoid robots and other robotic systems, is close to securing a new funding round led by Sequoia Capital. According to two individuals familiar with the matter, the deal would value the startup at approximately $500 million. This development comes merely three months after Mecka revealed a $60 million raise in a round spearheaded by Framework Ventures, with contributions from Menlo Ventures, SV Angel, and Kindred Ventures. The specifics of the current negotiations are still fluid and subject to change. Mecka AI did not provide a response to inquiries for comment, and Sequoia chose not to comment.

Founded in 2024 by a quartet of entrepreneurs, Mecka AI includes Canadians Josh Gao and Mogen Cheng, who had previously launched a fintech startup for restaurants, as well as Jason Chong, who became part of Coinbase following its acquisition of his cryptocurrency exchange. Duy Nguyen, the sole non-Canadian in the group, handles operations at Mecka. None of the four co-founders come from robotics backgrounds. Nevertheless, they identified a significant shortage of physical-world data and pinpointed the capture of real-world interactions as the key obstacle impeding the progress of general-purpose robots, such as humanoids.
Taking its name from "mecha," which refers to a fictional giant robot operated by humans, Mecka aimed to replicate for robotics what companies like Scale AI, Mercor, Surge, and other human data firms have achieved for large language models. The startup compensates individuals to film themselves carrying out routine activities—such as brewing coffee or repairing vehicles—using body sensors and smartphones. By early June, Mecka anticipated reaching an annual run rate of $100 million by the end of 2026, as shared by Gao with Fortune during the announcement of the prior fundraising effort.
Although Mecka AI has not made its customer roster public, numerous robotics firms and AI research labs depend on real-world data obtained via this "egocentric" method, in addition to other physical data gathering techniques like teleoperation, to develop their models. This includes companies valued at $2 billion and human-data platforms that are branching out past LLMs, such as Scale AI and Micro1.
