Meta has announced that it will increase the prices of its virtual reality headsets, citing higher costs for memory chips. The change will take effect on April 19.
The Meta Quest 3S (128GB) and Meta Quest 3S (256GB) will each see a $50 increase, bringing their new prices to $349.99 and $449.99, respectively. Meanwhile, the Meta Quest 3 will rise by $100 to a new price of $599.99.
In a blog post, the company explained the decision, stating, “We’re making this change because the cost of building high-performance VR hardware has risen significantly.” The post continued, “The global surge in the price of critical components - specifically memory chips - is impacting almost every category of consumer electronics, including VR. To keep delivering the quality of hardware, software, and support you expect from the Quest platform, we need to adjust our pricing.”
The updated pricing will also apply to refurbished Meta Quest units. However, all Meta Quest accessories will remain at their current prices.
Meta now joins other major technology firms, including Samsung, Microsoft, and Sony, in raising hardware prices in response to ongoing shortages and increased costs for memory components.
