Meta's Updated Terms Allow AI Training on Business Account Content: What Publishers Need to Know

Meta has recently revised its commercial terms of service, stating that the company may "use any content from [a business account's] domains, web pages, or URLs to provide, develop, improve, research, train, and maintain the integrity of" Meta's products and services. Legal experts speaking with Nieman Lab described this as a "remarkable provision" that appeared to grant Meta permission to scrape the websites of any publisher holding a Meta business account and leverage that content for training its AI models. (Although Meta successfully defended itself against a prominent copyright infringement lawsuit last year, other legal challenges against AI companies—Meta included—are still ongoing.)
A Meta spokesperson, however, maintained that the updated terms did not represent any shift in how Meta crawls the web. Now, according to The Verge, that provision has been eliminated. "We've heard you and want to clarify: the crawling terms we consolidated only applied to our ads and business products, and we've clarified that in the terms themselves," the company stated. "It does not change how Meta uses web crawlers."
