Meta's Muse AI App Outpaces ChatGPT in Early Downloads and Daily Active Users, New Data Reveals

Meta's newest AI application, Muse, may be on track to become the company's next big success, according to freshly released data. Estimates from market intelligence firm Appfigures show that Muse was downloaded more times in its first twelve days than ChatGPT was in the same window following its launch. It's worth noting this comparison covers only the U.S. and Canadian markets.
The same firm also found that Muse is drawing more daily active users than ChatGPT did at the equivalent stage. Until now, a true side-by-side comparison had been tricky, since the two apps rolled out with very different strategies. ChatGPT's mobile debut was worldwide but limited to iOS, whereas Muse is available on both Apple's App Store and Google Play, yet only in the U.S. and Canada. To level the playing field, Appfigures focused solely on iOS data from the U.S. and Canada for both apps across their respective first twelve days. Within that narrowed dataset, Muse reached 1.8 million downloads, compared with ChatGPT's 1.3 million. All told, Muse has racked up 2.8 million installs globally during its first 12 days, the firm added. Its momentum hasn't leveled off yet either; Muse has climbed from its initial spot at No. 2 overall on the U.S. App Store right after launch to No. 1 now, as Business Insider reported on Friday. That rise pushed the app above ChatGPT, the outlet pointed out.

Beyond that, Appfigures' data suggests Muse's U.S. daily active users now outpace ChatGPT's at the same point after its debut. Looking strictly at U.S. mobile app daily active users, Muse comes out ahead with 642,000 daily users, versus 231,000 for ChatGPT at the time. To account for the fact that Muse is available on both iOS and Android while ChatGPT launched on iOS only, Appfigures narrowed the comparison to iOS alone. Even there, Muse still leads with 359,000 daily active users on iOS, remaining above ChatGPT's numbers from that period. Appfigures can only offer third-party estimates of an app's downloads and active users, since it lacks direct access to Meta's internal figures. Still, even if these numbers are only roughly accurate, they suggest Muse could have a real shot at becoming Meta's next top app. Meta already honed its cross-promotion playbook with the launch of Instagram's Threads, which now boasts over 500 million users thanks to aggressive marketing and integrations within Meta's biggest apps, including Instagram and Facebook. Muse will likely receive a similar boost, given that the AI app can link up with both of those platforms. It also functions inside WhatsApp, which could provide yet another lift. While Appfigures doesn't have direct visibility into Meta's cross-promotion efforts or advertising, it did observe that more than 95% of Muse's users are also Facebook users and 63% are Instagram users. Meta, which has been asked for comment, has not yet released public figures about Muse's early adoption.
