OpenAI revealed on Monday the creation of a new independent advisory body that will be based at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. The group, named The Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, is designed to provide mathematicians with greater influence over the company's research focused on mathematics. According to the announcement, "This group will serve as a bridge to the mathematical community and broader public, giving mathematicians a voice in how we move forward."

This development follows the sudden release of a solution to the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize problem. Alongside unveiling the new group, OpenAI also stated that the same internal model had cracked over 100 other unsolved problems spanning nearly all branches of mathematics. The rapid succession of these results has drawn criticism from numerous well-known mathematicians. Just earlier this month, twenty-five Fields Medal recipients signed an open letter expressing concern that AI laboratories are endangering their intellectual pursuits as they compete to outdo one another by solving celebrated mathematical challenges.

As its name suggests, OpenAI's new group will primarily function in an advisory role, evaluating the importance of new findings and helping to coordinate how they are shared. Members will not receive payment, but they are permitted to provide advice even when not asked, to publicly share their opinions, and to govern their own membership—affording them some degree of autonomy from the company. Nevertheless, the group will not have the authority to decelerate or alter the direction of OpenAI's current mathematical research. The blog post clarifies, "the group will not be responsible for advising us on how to pace our internal progress on mathematics."

The Institute for Advanced Study underscored this limitation in its own statement. "Although we will give advice, we do not have decision making power at any AI company, and the responsibility for the decisions made by any company will rest with that company," the institute said in a press release. Nine distinguished mathematicians have been appointed as the group's inaugural members. Significantly, just one of them—Camillo de Lellis of the IAS—was also a signatory to the Fields Medalists' letter.
