OpenAI Acquires Orchestra Bio to Launch AI Agents for Drug Discovery Operations

OpenAI announced on its website Tuesday that it has acquired Orchestra Bio, a four-year-old startup that develops AI software for the biotech industry. Financial terms of the deal were not made public. The startup had reportedly raised roughly $20 million as of 2025 from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Atria, and 8VC.

Orchestra builds AI agents designed to help biotech companies handle the day-to-day details of drug discovery operations — everything from tracking finances to sorting out scheduling problems with clinical trials. According to OpenAI, Orchestra's team and technology will be folded into work on Rosalind, its AI model for life sciences research, as well as the related Rosalind Workbench tool, a harness built to help researchers plan experiments and analyze their results. OpenAI says Rosalind has already attracted some major customers, including Moderna and Novo Nordisk.

The deal illustrates a broader pattern: the largest AI labs — OpenAI and Anthropic in particular — are steadily building more and more software for major industries such as pharma. Within the startup ecosystem, there's a persistent worry that these labs could launch new features at any moment and turn into direct competitors. In this instance, though, Orchestra is being absorbed rather than crushed.
