OpenAI has acquired Glass Imaging, a smartphone camera technology company, in a deal valued at more than $300 million, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.

Glass Imaging was established in 2019 and is headquartered in Los Altos, California. Prior to the acquisition, the company had raised approximately $30 million in funding from investors.

The firm was founded by Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, both former Apple engineers who had previously led the team responsible for developing Apple's Portrait Mode. That experience directly shapes the work they do at Glass Imaging, where they leverage AI to work around the physical size limitations of smartphone cameras.

Instead of applying AI to edit a photo after it has been captured, Glass Imaging employs neural networks to learn about specific camera systems — such as the different cameras found on various smartphone models — in order to produce better images right from the moment the shutter is pressed.

OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The maker of ChatGPT is rumored to be developing its own hardware, including smartphones, earbuds, and AI companion devices. In 2025, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and renowned Apple designer Jony Ive revealed that they had been collaborating on a device startup called io, when OpenAI purchased Ive's company for $6.5 billion.
