OpenAI Announces Major Executive Shifts, Including COO's Move to Lead Strategic Projects

Several OpenAI executives are shifting into new positions, as detailed in a recent report. Fidji Simo, who leads AGI development, shared in an internal memo that Brad Lightcap, the company’s Chief Operating Officer, is moving to oversee “special projects.” His new responsibilities will include managing “complex deals and investments across the company,” and he will report directly to CEO Sam Altman.

Denise Dresser, the former Slack CEO who recently became OpenAI’s Chief Revenue Officer, will temporarily assume some of Lightcap’s COO duties during this transition.

Simo also shared personal news, explaining that she will be taking medical leave for the coming weeks to address a neuroimmune condition. “I have done everything possible to avoid it, but sadly my body isn’t cooperating,” she wrote in the memo. She added, “The timing is maddening because we have such an exciting roadmap ahead that the team is executing on, and I hate to miss even a minute of it.”

While Simo is on leave, OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman will oversee product management. Additionally, Kate Rouch, the head of marketing, is stepping down from her role to focus on cancer recovery. The memo noted that she will return to a “different, more narrowly scoped role when her health allows.” OpenAI plans to begin a search for a new Chief Marketing Officer.

The company expressed confidence in its ongoing operations, stating, “We’re well-positioned to keep executing with continuity and momentum.”
