OpenAI has seen yet another high-ranking executive walk out the door, and this particular departure is drawing extra attention because of the role this person played in shaping the company's data center strategy. Chris Malone, who served as OpenAI's head of data centers, left the organization last week, according to the Wall Street Journal. Malone's background includes nearly five years at Meta and over a decade at Google before that. He joined OpenAI in March of last year, meaning his time with the company was relatively brief.

Malone came on board shortly after the launch of the Stargate Project, a $500 million data center initiative backed by the Trump administration that aims to build data centers across the United States. OpenAI is considered a key partner in this effort alongside Oracle, Nvidia, SoftBank, and Microsoft. The exact reasons for Malone's departure remain unclear. Given the industry-wide surge in AI infrastructure spending, data center strategy has become one of the most closely watched positions at any AI lab, making turnover in that seat especially notable. The company stated: "We have a strong, deeply experienced data center team in place, with clear leadership and the technical expertise to execute our plans."

As part of a reorganization, according to the WSJ, Malone stopped reporting directly to OpenAI President Greg Brockman and instead began reporting to Vice President Sachin Katti, who took over leadership of the group. Several other executives are reportedly now overseeing OpenAI's data center efforts, including Uday Ruddarraju, who leads the data center team; Brent Mayo, who manages data center build and delivery; and Spas Lazarov, a veteran of the data center and energy industries, who heads all data center engineering.

Whatever prompted Malone's exit, he's hardly alone in leaving. His departure adds to a growing list of more than a dozen executive exits this year. Business Insider recently counted 13 departures for 2026, with several occurring in just the past month. These aren't junior staff members either—they're some of the most senior figures at the company. Two weeks ago, OpenAI replaced its chief revenue officer, Denise Dresser, after she had been with the company for only about eight months. Just two days before Dresser's departure was announced, the company also lost Brad Lightcap, one of its longest-serving executives, who had spent years as chief operating officer. Lightcap mentioned he would be "starting something new" but hasn't shared details about what that entails.

Roughly a month before those exits, the company also lost Fidji Simo, its de facto second-in-command, who served as product and business chief and reported directly to CEO Sam Altman. She stepped down to recover from a "chronic illness" and remains with the company in an advisory role. OpenAI's safety and ethics teams have also seen notable departures. In July, the company lost its "head of ethics," Chloé Bakalar, and last week it was reported that the company had disbanded its preparedness team, a unit focused on assessing whether the company's AI models could pose catastrophic risks. Other team leaders, like Bill Peebles, former head of OpenAI's now-defunct AI image generator Sora, have left because their projects were shut down. In April, the company also lost its chief marketing officer, Kate Rouch, who—like Simo—reportedly left for health reasons.

The remaining talent has tried to downplay the significance of the ongoing exodus, with co-founder Greg Brockman recently lamenting that the intense "spotlight" on the company means "every departure gets scrutinized in a way that it doesn't otherwise."

But the churn has naturally raised questions, especially as OpenAI prepares for an IPO. Its public listing, originally expected this year, is now reportedly pushed to 2027, and the company is undergoing the kind of reputational vetting that comes with any looming listing. Concerns have emerged that the company may be overvalued and that its profitability doesn't match the massive investments being poured into the lab. Suffice it to say, the steady stream of outgoing executives hasn't done much to quiet those doubts.
