Stability AI Secures $76M Series B to Expand AI Image Generation, Backed by Sony, Universal, and Warner Music

Stability AI, the company known for creating the AI image generation model Stable Diffusion, has secured $76 million in a Series B funding round. This latest injection brings the company’s total fundraising to $232 million. The announcement came on Tuesday, with the company highlighting that a significant portion of the new capital comes from notable players in the entertainment sector, including Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, and gaming giant Electronic Arts (EA). Investment firms AMD Ventures and Pacific Alliance Ventures also participated in the round.

This investor lineup is quite distinctive—less like a traditional venture capital raise and more like a collection of partners that Stability now relies on for content licensing and distribution. Stability AI’s CEO, Prem Akkaraju, who took the helm in 2024, described the funding as "an affirmation of our vision where generative AI empowers every producer, musician, and storyteller." The company intends to channel these funds into expanding its "creative production" product suite and scaling up its professional services division. At present, Stability offers a range of AI models tailored for music, video, and image creation.

Founded in 2019, Stability has spent the past year forging agreements to integrate generative AI into the creative workflows of entertainment companies. It established partnerships with Universal Music and EA in October, followed by a collaboration with Warner Music in November. These deals give the entertainment firms a role in co-developing Stability’s AI tools, rather than merely licensing the outputs. On the legal front, Stability has also seen a largely favorable stretch. The company mostly won a copyright case brought by Getty Images in the UK, where Getty accused Stability of infringing on intellectual property by using its images to train the image generation model. A judge sided largely with Stability in that matter, though a similar lawsuit from Getty in the US is still making its way through the courts. Additionally, in 2023, Stability faced a lawsuit from co-founder Cyrus Hodes, who alleged that fellow co-founder Emad Mostaque tricked him into selling his stake in the company.
