OpenAI and Microsoft have enjoyed a tight partnership since the very beginning, yet the AI research lab is steadily encroaching on Microsoft's core business—workplace software—by rolling out tools that bear a striking resemblance to a full office productivity suite.

During its Dev Day developer conference held Tuesday in San Francisco, OpenAI unveiled a collection of new ChatGPT capabilities aimed squarely at office workers.

The headline announcement was a feature called Space—a shared workspace embedded within ChatGPT where colleagues can team up with the chatbot as well as with their own Dots, OpenAI's freshly introduced AI agent personas capable of performing tasks on a user's behalf, across a variety of work activities.

"Your pages and files all live together in Space, like they would in a drive," CEO Sam Altman explained during Tuesday's presentation. "But spaces feel alive."

Altman noted that users can assign specific instructions to a page—for instance, having it monitor a team channel and refresh the page with whatever it discovers.

OpenAI also introduced Pages, a companion word processor the company characterizes as "a new type of document, built for human and agent collaboration." It comes across as OpenAI's direct response to Google Docs and Microsoft Word. According to OpenAI, users can "write, research, generate charts, create images, or visualize information" within it.

Additionally, OpenAI revealed its take on PowerPoint through what it calls collaborative slides. These presentations can be produced simply by discussing them inside ChatGPT. After they're generated, multiple employees and agents can collaborate on them simultaneously, with the ability to comment and make edits.

As OpenAI pushes further into Microsoft's domain, Microsoft—along with other software firms like Salesforce—is simultaneously striving to reinvent itself in OpenAI's image. Throughout the past year, both companies have pushed out a wave of AI offerings as the software sector scrambles to adapt to the rapidly evolving landscape.
