Nvidia’s AI Chip Dominance Challenged: OpenAI Launches Custom ‘Jalapeño’ Inference Chip with Broadcom to Reduce Single-Supplier Risk

Nvidia has long held a commanding position in the AI chip market, but the era of complete reliance on a single supplier may be drawing to a close. OpenAI recently announced its plans to introduce a custom inference chip, codenamed Jalapeño, developed in partnership with Broadcom. This move places OpenAI alongside Google, Apple, and SpaceX, all of which are increasingly turning to in-house hardware to reduce dependence on one vendor. The strategy isn't about a total break from Nvidia, but rather a strategic hedge. Custom silicon offers greater control, hardware tailored to specific workloads, and performance gains similar to what Apple achieved when it moved away from Intel processors.
